Every calling is great when greatly pursued.”
- Oliver Wendell Holmes
Writing your resume is an opportunity to write your future. This is your preordained appointment to update, advance, and “reimage” who you are. It’s a time to ponder your passions, values, and hard-wired skills. It’s cause to contemplate your life-work and your distinctive destiny—what is meaningful to you and how you will bring significance and value to your corner of the world.

ABOUT THIS BOOK

Successful companies invest a great deal of time and talent in developing persuasive marketing brochures. It often takes a team of business strategists, graphic artists, and copywriters to come up with just the right piece that will capture the essence of the company, its products or services, and the features and benefits it offers…all with the aim of getting the consumer—you—to buy.

Successful job seekers also invest a great deal of time and talent in developing their marketing document, more commonly known as a résumé (pronounced reh-suh-may; the word is French for summary). A résumé also requires a careful blend of business strategy, artistry, and copywriting to capture the essence of who you are and to communicate the unique selling features that will differentiate you from your competition…all with the aim of getting the consumer—the employer—to “buy.”

Despite its French translation, a résumé is much, much more than a summary of whom you worked for and what you did. In my dictionary, I have added these four definitions to describe a résumé:

• An advertisement that reflects your personal brand and appeals to employers’ specific needs, such as the need to generate income, save money, or solve a problem.

• A formal business communication that indicates your command of vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation.

• A keyword index that represents your knowledge base, skill set, impressive “name brand” companies or universities, degrees, licensure, software experience, or affiliations.

• A unique art form that combines font-work, layout, and design principles to create definitive visual appeal.
